K.C. from Travis County, Texas writes:
Dear Mister Condo,
I have mobility problems due to rheumatoid arthritis. If I buy a condo or townhouse, can I install an elevator in my home without seeking permission from HOA?
Mister Condo replies:
K.C., I am sorry about your rheumatoid arthritis and the pain that accompanies such a disorder. As for installing an elevator to help you go from floor to floor within your home, it is more likely to be a function of whether the home can withstand the installation than whether or not the HOA approves. Of course, you should check the Covenants and Restrictions as well as the Rules and Regulations to make sure there are no restrictions but I sincerely doubt you will find such a restriction. You should most certainly get the opinion of a structural engineer before undertaking any such project. All the best!
