Dear Mister Condo,
What are the requirements for one to serve as a Board Member?
Mister Condo replies:
J.L., there are no federal requirements for who can serve on the Board of a condominium association. Here in Connecticut, there are no state requirements for who can serve on the Board either. The association is governed by its own rules which are outlined in the condominium documents, in particular, the section about governance. There you will find the details about who can serve on your local condominium Board. Generally speaking, any unit owner with dues not in arrears is eligible to serve on the Board. Board members are volunteer members of the association who either seek election for a Board position at an Annual Meeting where elections are usually held or are appointed by members of the existing Board to fill an opening created by a death, resignation, or removal of an existing Board member. The only suggested requirement I have is that anyone who volunteers to serve on the Board should do so because they want to make a difference and protect, maintain, and enhance the common elements and the community as a whole. All the best!
