Dear Mister Condo,
Can condo boards ask unit owners to supply serial numbers and age of hot water tanks?
Mister Condo replies:
G.E., the association has a right to know how old your water heater is. Serial numbers are the easiest way to jive the age of the water heater with the information that the manufacturer provides to make sure that homeowners and the association know the true age of a water heater. If your association is requiring that water heaters cannot be any older than 7 years, the serial number would alert them to the year of production and thus the age of the water heater. Typically, this information is required from the association’s insurer who sets the age limits on these appliances. It is in everyone’s best interest that association homeowners provide this information. Good luck!
