Dear Mister Condo,
Hello, do you have any information about a smoke free policy within a condo complex of 280 units? For months now, my downstairs bathroom reeks or marijuana and cigarette smoke. I have no way of proving where it is coming from. Yesterday, a man sat on his deck (our decks) are inches apart and smoked weed. I am highly allergic to many things including smoke. My throat closed, I ran inside, grabbed my medicine, closed windows and turned on all the fans. I was very close to calling an ambulance. It was scary. Their attitude is nothing I can do, smoking and marijuana are both legal in CT. Our complex is FHA approved and I thought we had more protections (HUD). I have reached out to the Department of Health today as I thought there was more protections from second hand smoke.
Mister Condo replies:
L.M., that is certainly a tragic turn of events from second-hand smoke and marijuana smoke. Yes, both of those types of smoking are legal in Connecticut but both are easily banned inside a condo building. I wrote. Similar article in 2020 about it. You can read my reply here: https://askmistercondo.com/conversion-to-smoke-free-condo-is-possible/The Connecticut State Department of Health has very strong feelings on the matter and will be your advocate. Kindly refer to their website at https://portal.ct.gov/DPH/Health-Education-Management–Surveillance/Tobacco/Smokefree-housing-for-Condos. It might take some time and convincing or even a lawsuit but you can get what you want here. Good luck!
