Dear Mister Condo,
I’m asking this question on behalf of my coworker who will be forced to leave her condo for three months while they repair the foundation. Who is responsible for the costs associated; rent storage and moving fees? She has an 84-year-old father living with her and this is a very stressful situation. Thanks.
Mister Condo replies:
M.M., I am sorry to say that it is typically the homeowner who is responsible for such costs although there may be insurance coverage in the unit owner’s homeowner’s policy to help defray the expense. I appreciate the stress this will put on your coworker’s elderly father but that really isn’t the concern of the association who needs to get in to the unit and repair the foundation. The good news is that the unit will have a repaired foundation and be much safe upon their return. Check with the homeowner’s policy to see if they have coverage for being displaced. It is a fairly common policy coverage (most typically used for fire damage, etc.) that is hopefully available to help defray the costs. All the best!
