Dear Mister Condo,
Is there a mandated schedule for each step in the board election procedures?
Mister Condo replies:
E.C., typically an association’s governing documents spell out the procedure for electing unit owners to the Board and for the Board to then elect the officers from within the Board members. Additionally, it is not uncommon for Boards to allow multiple year service for Board members, meaning the volunteer may be elected for a one-, two-, or three-year term depending on the governance terms in the documents. Some associations have Nominating Committees that can help get folks to volunteer for service but even those associations usually allow for nominations from the floor during the election process. Once the Board is voted into office, their first order of business is often voting amongst themselves who will serve in the various offices and directors-at large positions. Take a look at your governance documents and see what they say. I think you’ll find all you are looking for there. Good luck!
