Dear Mister Condo,
I recently had a new storm door installed at my expense. The trim around the door is peeling Is that my responsibility or the HOA?
Mister Condo replies:
J.B., regardless of who installed the storm door, the ownership of the trim is likely the association, unless trim has always been a home owner expense. In other words, is the trim part of the building exterior or is it an extension of the door? You need to know who owns what to determine responsibility. Also, if the trim is the HOA’s responsibility, will they simply state that your installer caused the trim to peel? If so, you may still be on the hook for the trim repair. Are we talking a lot of money? Trim is typically quite inexpensive. I think I would inquire with the association if they will repair it. If not, I would get a few estimates for the job and likely pay for it myself just to get my front door looking good. You already spent the big bucks on the storm door. As long as it isn’t too expensive and your association will allow you to repair or paint the trim yourself, I think I would get it done this time and let the association worry about the upkeep and maintenance moving forward. After all, you aren’t going to need a storm door installation any time soon. All the best!
