Dear Mister Condo,
How to do we go about removing an unproductive Board Member?
Mister Condo replies:
M.S., the removal of any Board member that has been elected or appointed is done through a recall election as outlined in your association’s governance documents. I am not sure what you mean by “unproductive” but Board members are volunteers from within your community association who have either been elected or appointed to serve on the Board. If this is someone who recently joined the Board, you might just want to wait until the next election cycle to see if the performance has improved or if it is time to vote them off the Board. If this Board member has done something wrong or illegal, a recall election might make sense and be in the best interest of the association. You mention only one Board member. Are the other Board members of the same mindset as you that this person needs to leave the Board? If so, they could assist in the recall process. If not, it may just be best to wait until the next election. Either way, the power to remove Board members is with the unit owners as outlined in the association’s governance documents. All the best!
